Basin, In Process

Progress notes from a private commission: carving the central channel by hand.

Basin carving in the workshop

Basin starts as a flat oak slab and ends as a shallow vessel. The channel is laid out on the top in pencil, then roughed out with a router in passes no deeper than a few millimetres, so the wood can relax between cuts.

The final surface is carved by hand. Gouges and scrapers leave a faint facet that catches low light, and the depth is checked against a template along the full length.

The bronze inlay is cast to the channel, not the other way round: the carved oak is measured, the inlay is patterned from those measurements, and the two are fitted and adjusted until the joint closes along its length.
