Caring for Hard Wax Oil

A short guide to maintaining a Tekton table finished with hard wax oil.

Hand re-oiling a table

Hard wax oil soaks into the wood instead of sitting on top of it, so the surface stays matte and feels like timber rather than plastic. It also means the finish is maintained, not replaced.

For everyday cleaning, wipe with a soft cloth that is barely damp. For anything stickier, add a few drops of pH-neutral soap to the water. Avoid all-purpose sprays, silicone furniture polish and anything with ammonia or bleach.

Use coasters under hot dishes and wipe up wine, citrus and oil quickly. Small marks and dry patches can usually be lifted with a light rub of maintenance oil on a cloth, working with the grain.

Depending on use, a full refresh every one to two years keeps the surface even. Clean, let it dry, apply a thin coat of maintenance oil, and buff off the excess. The studio can do this for you, or send the products and instructions.
